Activity

Recognizing the reciprocal relationships between Korea and Thailand, Thammasat University had developed Korea Studies Center at the Institute of East Asian Studies since April, 1984. The Korean Studies Center has provided academic service by promoting scholarly research and studies on Korea and her relationships with Thailand, compiling and disseminating the finding and knowledge or relevant information concerning Korea to the public, and encouraging cultural exchange and academic cooperation among educational institution in both countries

 

Objective   

The Objectives of the Korean Studies Center are the following :

  1. To promote scholarly research and studies on Korea and her relationship with Thailand

  2. To compile basic information concerning Korea to the public

  3. To disseminate the findings and knowledge through lectures, seminars, conferences, trainings and publications etc. in order to promote a broader and better public understanding

  4. To encourage cultural exchange and academic cooperation among scholars and to strengthen the close relationship among educational institutions in both countries.

The activities of Korean Studies Center 

The activities or projects of Korean Studies Center from 1984 are following

 

 Research

The Korean Studies Center’s research projects include both basic and applied research, which are carried out by our researchers and professors of various faculties in Thammasat University. The Korean Studies Center limits its area of research responsibility to concern to Korea, especially those affecting Thailand and her people. Seminar

The Korean Studies Center has greatly expanded its academic services to the public in the form of lecture series, seminar and conference. Each year at least one international conference, several national seminars and numerous lectures and panel discussions are organized on selected Topies about Korean Studies as well as current events and issues in the country. Publication

The Korean Studies Center publishes journals on Korea issues by the means of The Journal of East Asian Studies (1 vol./year, the papers on the Newsletters “East”, research monographs as well as Texts books.

Scholar Exchange

The Korean Studies Center welcome visiting scholars and researchers from foreign countries wishing to come and do research in Thailand

Library and Data Bank

Realizing that the service we are rending is still inadequate because there had been a continous demand for statstical data and currenty information facts concerning Korea, The KSC has set up another unit to coordinate with the Library, so called “Data Bank”

Training

The KSC plans to provide three types of training programs annually. The first one is the training of High school teachers and teacher college instructors on Korean Studies in cooperation with the Ministry of Education. The second one is the Korean language training program. The third one is training about Thai issues for Korean businessmen or the group of Korean people or Korean students.

 

Language Program

The Korean Studies Center has set up. Language teaching program since 1996 to provide special Korean language course for people in various professions for example businessmen, tour guides and students etc. Now Korean language course is on the eighth courses and we plan to publish the handbook, tape casset and CD-ROM to use for teaching these course.

The Korean Studies Center Committee has recognised the importance of Korean language in communication between Thai and Korean people. If they can communicate smoothly, it will certainly enhance their business. So the Korean Studies Center Committee of Institute of East Asian Studies submitted its suggestions to Faculty of Liberal Arts of Thammasat University to provide Korean Courses for students. If this program is approved, it may be opened for students to register by the year 2000. Although we have facilities to conduct Korean Coures but we lached of budget to operat. It is on budgeting process.

Korean Scientific and Cultural Studies Programme (KSCSP) 

The Korean Studies Studies planned to build the KSCSP since 1997 for the purposes that

    1. To serve as an information center which dissiminates Korean Studies information in various forms to educational institutions and the general public.

    2. To serve as a venue for Korean arts and culture exhibition.

    3. To promote and provide back up for Korean Studies courses at every educational level.

    4. To act as a center for the exchange of cultures between Korea and other countries.

    5. To promote better understanding and closer ties between Thailand and Korea.
